It was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, but was destroyed by fire with the fall of the Toyotomi clan in the Osaka Summer Campaign. It was later rebuilt by the Tokugawa Shogunate, but was destroyed by lightning several times. The present keep was reconstructed in 1931.
