The elephants are extremely sturdy, so I'm guessing there is some type of hard foundation under the wicker.-I purchased the bookends as a part of an Indian store closing. So they are new. However, they appear pre-owned. Like the black paint on the base has some chips. They are new though. Gorgeous elephants.
